Bern City Guide:


Bern is one of the capitals in Switzerland. It is the main city in the Canton of Bern. It is ranked as the 4th most occupied city in Switzerland. It has 43 municipalities. The city proper is occupied with approximately 350,000 people. The urban area has more than 600,000 populations. The official language of Bern is German. However, most residents don't speak German language. Instead, they speak a dialect called Bernese German. Some residents can also speak English.


The city center in Bern has many medieval buildings. Many medieval buildings in Bern are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Zytglogge, also known as Time Bell is a large clock tower that has movable puppets. There is a Gothic cathedral that dates back to the 15th century. Munster is a medieval town hall built during 15th century.


If you like shopping, you can visit the shopping promenade at Bern, which is approximately 6 km in length. The Barengraben is a bear pit that contains four bears including two adult and two young bears. The bears are given as presents by the president of Russia. The Federal Palace houses the most important administration centers from the mid 19th century to early 20th century. Visitors can visit the house of world renowned scientist, Albert Einstein at Bern. Einsteinhaus used to be the apartment where Einstein lived from 1903 – 1905.

Bern has many opera theaters including Bern Theatre, Tojo Theater, Schlachthaus-theater, and etc. Bern also has movie theaters. The movies shown at the theaters are published in the original language. For example, an English movie is shown in English language. The movie may provide French and German subtitles. There are very few movies dubbed in German. SHNIT is an international festival that celebrates short films. Bern also has other festivals such as BeJazz, Gurten festival and etc.

There are plenty of restaurants at the center of Bern district. You can find restaurants at Grosser Muristalden, Dalmaziquai, Kornhausplatz and Herrengasse.

Bern Rail Station offers train services to domestic and international locations. At Bern, there is a short funicular that operates from Marzili to Bundeshaus. The old quarters of Bern is connected to the new quarters by Aare bridges. Tourists can travel around Bern by using highways. There are three major highways that connect to the other cities in Switzerland. Bern Airport, also known as Bern-Belp, provides air transportation to major cities in Switzerland and Europe.
