Aachen City Guide:


Aachen is a spa city located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Cologne region, Germany. The town used to be the residence of the kings in Germany. It is near to European countries such as Belgium and Netherlands. The main sight of Aachen is Aachen cathedral. Aachen cathedral was constructed as a result of order received from King Charlemagne during 786 A.D. The corpse of Charlemagne was buried in the crypt of Aachen cathedral. After many years, the cathedral building was expanded and different architecture styles were integrated into it. Aachen city hall is quite popular among tourists. The interior of Aachen city hall is decorated with five frescoes. The five frescoes are drawn by Alfre Rethel. The frescoes depict the life of King Charlemagne during his reign in Aachen. Charlemagne's signature can be seen on the frescoes.


If you want to explore the city archive, you can visit Grashaus. Grashaus is the oldest building in Aachen. It was used as the city hall by the local government in the past. Elisenbrunnen has many famous fountains. It is located within walking distance from Aachen cathedral.


Two city gates including Ponttos and Kleinmarschiertor are located in the proximity of central railway station. Some parts that belonged to the medieval city walls still remain standing at Aachen. Five towers are still visible in the city. Most of the remaining medieval city walls are integrated into modern buildings and are no longer visible to visitors. Throughout Aachen, there are many 17th and 18th century buildings. The 17th and 18th century buildings feature Baroque styles. Besides, you can also observe many old factory sites that operated during the early 19th and 20th centuries.

Tourists can get refreshments from restaurants located in the city center. Some of the streets where you can find restaurants include Fischmarkt, Pontstrabe, Schonauer, and Marketplatz.

Aachen railway station offers ICE high speed train services to destinations in France and Germany including Brussels, Cologne and etc. Euregiobahn regional train stations offers route services to small cities located in Aachen. Aachen has three main highways. Autobahn A4 provides connection to the western and eastern region of the town. A44 highway connects residents to the northern and southern region of Aachen. Aachen has three airports. Maastricht Aachen Airport is the nearest to the town.
