Reims City Guide:


Reims is a town located in Marne department, Champagne-Ardenne region, France. The Gauls originally founded Reims. During the reign of Roman emperor, it was an important city. The city proper has a population of approximately one hundred and ninety thousand people. The metropolitan area has a population of about three hundred thousand people. Though Reims is the largest city in its department and region, it is not the capital. Instead, Chalons-en-Champagne is the capital of Marne department and Champagne-Ardenne region.


Reims has a few public squares including Place Royale, Place Cardinal-Lucon, Rue de Vesle, and Place Drouet d'Erlon. Place Royale has a statue that depicts the figure of King Louis XV. Place Cardinal-Lucon has an equestrian statue that features Joan of Arc. Nearby Place Drouet d'Erlon, there are many restaurants and cafes that open until midnight. During summer months, many tourists visit Place Drout d'Erlon to enjoy the warmth from the sun. During Christmas, a large market will be held at Place Drout d'Erlon.


Reims also has monuments that are built during Gallo-Roman period. The Porte de Mars, also known as Mars Gate has a tall arch that measures 108 feet in length and 43 feet in height. Many tourists are familiar with Reims cathedral, Notre-Dame de Reims. It was the place where coronation ceremonies for French kings were held. In 1991, it was accepted as a place rich in heritage culture in UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Palace of Tau is also listed along with Notre-Dame de Reims in UNESCO World heritage list. At the Palace of Tau, you will be able to explore the salon, and chapel. The salon was used as a place for holding royal banquet for French officials with high positions. The chapel has two storeys and has decorative Perpersack tapestries dated back to the 1600s.

Reims has 2 railway stations including Gare de Reims and Gare de Champagne-Ardenne. Gare de Reims is located in the center of the city. It is used as the main transportation to the regions around Reims. Gare de Champagne-Ardenne is located about 5 km from the town. It offers high speed train services to major cities such as Paris, Strasbourg and etc. You can also travel to Reims through motorways including A4 and A26 motorways.
