Orleans City Guide:


Orleans is a city located in Loiret department, Center region, France. The city is located approximately 130 km southwest of Paris. It is situated near to Loire River. There is a city in the United States called New Orleans that is named after this city.


St. Croix Cathedral is a famous landmark in Orleans. The original church was built during the 13th century. After the Huguenots destroyed it, the local parishes rebuilt it. The rebuilding of the church took place in the 17th century. The building was completed during the 19th century. The cathedral features Gothic style. The windows of the cathedral have rose design. The stained rose art on the window is dedicated to King Louis XIV. The church has ornamental woodwork. You can go down to the crypt to discover the treasures.

In Orleans, there are a number of museums and parks. The two most famous parks are Parc Floral de la Source and Pasteur Parc. Parc Floral de la Source houses Loiret River's source in the middle. The French Ministry of Culture had given the park an award called Jardin remarquable. The park contain two main sections including Plateau de Sologne and La plaine du Val de Loire. Plateau de Sologne is consist mainly of oak trees. The forest also contains many hornbeams trees. Many types of sheep can be seen in the farm at Pleteau de Sologne. La plaine du Val de Loire is a garden which has a butterfly glass house, kitchen garden and etc.

Nearby the cathedral, there are many timbered houses that reflect medieval architecture. You can find a variety of cafes, and restaurants at the streets near the cathedral.

Orleans can be accessed by a variety of ways including public transportation, roads, railway and etc. The local bus services are provided by SEMTAO. SEMTAO also operate the tram line in Orleans. The highways in Orleans connect residents to many destinations including Bordeaux, Bourges, Artenay, Paris, Spain and etc. In Orleans, there are two train stations. Both train stations are situated in the northern region of suburban area. Long distance trains will stop by at Les Aubrais-Orleans stations. From Les Aubrais-Orleans can connect to several destinations in the region including Paris, Brive-la-Gaillarde, and Nevers.
