Lourdes City Guide:


Lourdes is located in Hautes-Pyrenees department, Midi-Pyrenees region, France. It is the principal town of two cantons. It is the joint seat for dioceses that live in Tarbes-et-Lourdes. Lourdes is the most popular and largest pilgrimage site in France. It became famous following the legend of Saint Mary's appearances to a young girl called Bernadette Soubirous.


According to Soubirous, Saint Mary made a total of 18 appearances to her. If you visit Lourdes, you can go to the cave, where Soubirous claimed to witness the apparition. After the appearances, Lourdes became one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.


Every year, five million pilgrims from different parts of the world paid visits to Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is estimated that more than two hundred million people visited the sanctuary since the opening of the site in the midst 19th century.

Nearby to the sanctuary, there is a grotto that offers fresh spring water. It is reported that a number of pilgrims get healed from their diseases after drinking or bathing in the spring water. Sixty seven people testified that they were miraculously healed from their diseases after drinking or bathing in the spring water. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a grant Catholic Church with five domes. The Byzantine architecture of the church is designed by architect, Jerzy Nowosielski. The architecture of the whole church building is designed by Myroslav Nimciv.

Esplanade du Rosaire is located on the west side of Lourdes. Every day, there is a procession that head towards the Esplanade du Rosaire. The Basilica of the Rosary is located on the west of Esplanade du Rosaire. The basilica can accommodate a congregation of more than 5000 people.

There is a museum in the Paviolion Notre-Dame. Musee Bernadette offers a variety of art collections. Musee d'Aret Sacre du Gemmail offers a large collection of stained glass arts.

Tourists can visit the underground church, St-Pie X, also known as St. Pius X on the south of Espanade des Processions. The underground church can accommodate more than twenty thousand pilgrims.

Restaurants can be found at several places including Route de Tarbes, Place Marcadal, Place Champ Commun, Chemin Lac, and Rue Fort.

Lourdes railway station is the main transportation system for the local people. Both SNCF and TGV trains stop at Lourdes. You can also arrive at Lourdes by bus. The local airport is Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees Airport. There is another nearby airport called Pau Pyrenees Airport.

Train to Lourdes::
