La Rochelle City Guide:


La Rochelle is a large city in Charente-Maritime department, Poitou-Charentes region, France. During the early years, the Gaul people settled in La Rochelle. Gaul people are descendants of Santones tribes. During the period of their settlements, they named the nearby region as Saintonage. After that, Romans began to occupy the city. There are a large number of villas and salt evaporation ponds left behind by the Romans. For the convenience of tourists, a bridge was built to connect the city to lle de Re. The bridge has a length of 2.9 km.


In La Rochelle, there is a large aquarium that offers exhibitions on many species of marine animals. There is also a small garden called Jardin des plantes de La Rochelle that offers a variety of local plants.

La Rochelle Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals that date back to the 16th century. The cathedral features a 15th century tower. Jacques Gabriel designed the La Rochelle Cathedral.

Tourists can visit the Vieux Port to view the scenery of the finishing boat. Vieux Port is a busy fishing port. Two statues are located on the left and right sides of the entrance to Vieux Port. Te two statues are Tour St-Nicholas and Toru de la Chaine.

If you want to explore Renaissance buildings, you can visit Place de l'Hotel-de-Ville. At Place de l'Hotel-de-Ville, there are many buildings that are built during the late 16th and 17th centuries. There is a defensive wall surrounding the buildings. Rue des Merciers also have several old houses.

There are several museums in La Rochelle including Musee de Peinture, and Fleuriau Museum. Musee de Peinture is located inside an 18th century bishop palace. The original painting called Andoration of the Shephards by E. Le Seuer is one of the most viewed paintings at the museum.

La Rochelle restaurants offer delicious local and international cusines. The restaurants are concentrated in places such as Rue Chaine, Rue Saint Jean du Perot, bis rue Temple, Quai Duperre and Plage de la Concurrence.

Tourists can travel around La Rochelle by taking boat bus, TGV train or car. If you want to go to other islands, you can take a boat ride. If you want to visit different places in the town, it is best that you rent a car.
