Dijon City Guide:


Dijon is the capital of Cote-d'Or department, Burgundy region, France. The city is occupied by more than 300,000 residents. During ancient time, Dijon was a settlement for the Roman people. It is claimed that Saint Benignus preached Christianity to the residents in Dijon before being martyred. The dukes of Burgundy used to live in Dijon during the 11th century.


Dijon has many grand churches. St. Michel Dijon Cathedral is one of the most popular churches in Dijon. In the basement of St. Michel Dijon Cathedral, there is a crypt which contains the tomb of Saint Benignus. The crypt is estimated to date back to approximately one thousand years ago. Other churches in Dijon include St. Philibert Cathedral, and Notre Dame de Dijon Cathedral.

If you take a walk around the city, you will notice that there are many buildings that feature architecture styles such as Capetian, Renaissance and etc. Many buildings in Dijon use Burgundian polychrome roofs. Burgundian polychrome roof is made from terracotta tiles.

Tourists can visit Chartreuse de Champnol on the west of Dijon. The church was demolished but several structures still remains. Among the remains of the church include the church door and Moses fountain. Both the church door and Moses fountain are date back to the early 15th century.

If you want to view French paintings, you can visit Musee Magnin. Musee Magnin is located inside the Hotel Lantin. The 17th century mansion was converted into a museum by Auguste Perret.

Near the Ducal Palace, there is a beautiful Burgundian Gothic church called Notre-Dame church. Notre-Dame Church was constructed during the 13th century. There are two galleries on the exterior of the church building. In between the two galleries, there are sculptures of gargoyles in grotesque forms. Some of the highlights of the church include a clock tower, and Black Virgin wood sculpture. In the church, there is a tapestry cloth that features the siege and liberation of the town.

Tourists that are looking for restaurants can visit Place du President Wilson. Other places where you can find restaurants include Place Darcy, Eue Claus Sluter, Rue Sainte-Anne, and Place Grangier.

Trains at Dijon railway station provide services to Paris every 1 hour and 40 minutes. You can book your air ticket with Air France from Dijon airport. If you want to travel to other destinations from Dijon, you can board on the Eurolines train.
