Paris City Guide

Paris is the most visited city in the world, with more than 42 million people from around the globe gracing its streets each year. Just a brief listing of the city's most famous sites quickly reveals why.

Naturally, the Eiffel Tower is still considered the city's iconic masterpiece, attracting more paid attendees than any attraction in the world. At 324 meters (1,063 ft), the Tower, originally built for the 1889 World's Fair, was for 41 years the world's tallest structure. But there is far more to be found in Paris for the interested explorer.

Almost as famous is the Musée du Louvre. Over 8 million visitors a year come to see its 35,000 exhibited items (among them the Da Vinci's Mona Lisa), making it the most attended art museum in the world. The museum is built inside the remnants of a 12th century fortress, some of the remains of which are still visible.

Described in 1323 as one of Paris's three most important buildings, the Notre Dame de Paris is still today used by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Paris. Relics of the Crown of Thorns are purported to be in the cathedral's treasury, and the building itself is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in Europe.

With an astonishing 3,800 historical sites alone, even attempting to narrow down the list to just some must-see set is all but impossible. A brief attempt might include such landmarks as...

--> The Avenue des Champs-Élysées with its copious amount of luxury shops and cafes,
--> The Panthéon, a mausoleum containing the remains of some of France's most distinguished individuals,
--> The Arc de Triomphe, a monument to the fallen of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (and which contains beneath it the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier),
--> The Grande Mosquée de Paris, the 3rd largest mosque in France, built to honor the Muslims who fought and died in World War I,
--> The Palais Garnier, home of the Paris Opera for much of the 19th century,
--> The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the largest science museum in Europe.

...as well as the Palace of Versailles, the Les Invalides, and even several replicas of the Statue of Liberty! Any visitor to Paris would do well to prepare for a long stay; or else, to come back again later and see more of the things that they missed!
