London is a vibrant city reuniting many cultures. It is the perfect environment for all manifestations of culture, customs and beliefs, as well as a home for some of the world's oldest traditions. Festivals and music shows take place on a regular basis. Here are some of this year's most important events.
Wimbledon: Everyone has knowledge of the oldest and most presitgious tennis tournament in the world, which took place between the 20th of June and the 3rd of July this year (as this event always begins on a Monday found between June 20th and 26th).
The London Triathlon: This is also the oldest event of this kind in the world and takes place annually. It is an opportunity for athletes to prove their skills and carry on a valuable tradition. The British are perfectly aware that sports are vital to culture and progress.
New Year's Eve Fireworks and New Year's Day Parade: These events are of a great importance in creating a specific celebration atmosphere and bring citizens together every year.
Chinese New Year Celebrations: As London is the place where cultures interfere, there are several events dedicated to this cultural exchange, such as the Chinese New Year celebrations, one of the most important traditional holidays in the Chinese culture.
Bonfire Night: It is one of the oldest English traditions, also known as Guy Fawkes night. Every 5th November figures representing Guy Fawkes, the notorious member of the Gunpowder Plot are burnt on bonfires to celebrate his failure in murdering King James I.
Saint Patrick's Day Parade: This event is based on highly religious grounds, commemorating Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.
Notting Hill Carnival: It is an annual event held in August, during two days. The Carnival is initiated by the Indian memebers of the community and two million people attend every year.
London Jewellery Week: Notorious designers and manufacturers in the jewellery world will make themselves at home during this glamorous and pretentious event. One of its main aims is to reveal the many beauties resulted from art and technology working together. This event attracts many visitors and is held during summer.
The Proms: This summer delight mainly offers daily classical music concerts and is usually held in Royal Albert Hall, for eight consecutive weeks.
Open City London: This event is basically a four-day documentary film festival and celebration aiming to broaden cultural horizons and spread scientific knowledge.
