Tourists and vacationers do not only choose Lille for its very cultural attractions, they also stay for the festivals and events which seem to be present in almost every month of the year. Lille is rich in tradition and it certainly makes people more welcome when they can join certain festivities.
In September, Lille hosts the Heritage Days which is one festival to look forward to. This tradition allows more than ten thousand yearly visitors to view buildings which are normally closed to the community. These may include homes of well-known individuals or museums who offer free entrances to their visitors.
One can find a tourist office in the Place Rihour which can take visitors to the battleground at Messines. The tour typically includes a visitation of memorials, cemeteries and monuments. This usually occurs on every Saturday from April to October.
On Museum Night, Lille's museums open themselves to the people at night for a free tour of their best collections. A May festivity, it offers debates and workshops in museums all across France.
Lille's yearly Transphotographiques Festival is held on the months of May and June at the Maison de la Photographie. The festival was proposed by organizers to cater to young contemporary photographers who would someday become future talents in photography.
On the fourteenth day of July, all of France remembers the start of the historical French Revolution. This day was marked by the attack on the Bastille by the revolutionists. In Lille, they celebrate with a slew of attractive fireworks all over the town. The townspeople also organize balls which one may participate in. Tourists can even mix with the locals in dancing at the town square.
Every year at the Gare Saint-Sauveur, a guest artist unites artworks into a theme for the celebration of the 3000 Festival. Aside from this, the town also becomes festive with the numerous other events, programs and exhibitions taking place around Lille. This typically occurs during the months of April up to August.
One must not pass up the chance to take part in the Christmas Market which is held at the Place Rihour from November to December. At his time, Place Rihour overflows with stands that are selling artwork and craftwork. It also provides some sort of entertainment for children through the Ferris wheel and Christmas delicacies that are sure to swell your stomach and hearts.
There are more events which can happen around Lille. It has been called the party capital for the numerous festivals which happen all year round.
