Lille Tourist Attractions

Certainly, a trip to the city of Lille is a wonderful chance to immerse oneself in the cultural appeal of northern France. Lille has a lot to offer its visitors, as well as its inhabitants. It would take a long, long vacation to fully savor all of what it has to present.

Among the first places to visit in Lille is the Musee des Beaux Arts or the Fine Arts Museum. This museum is the second largest in all of France, next to the Louvre. Their art collection is quite extensive and includes some of the works of Picasso, Redon, van Dyck, and others. The museum also houses a collection of curios on eighteenth century models of cities.

There are two other museums in Lille which one can visit: the Open Air Museum and the Windmill Museum. The former features the recreation of local villages which existed in Lille's past. Meanwhile, the Windmill Museum displays two operational pivoting windmills. Visiting tourists are even allowed to watch the windmills in operation.

The Hospice Comtesse Museum, which was a hospital until 1939, has also been turned into an artistic museum for porcelain, paintings, tapestries, and sculptures. Known as one of a small number of enduring Flanders structures in Lille, it also features a wonderful garden just outside its walls.

Lille's Cathedral is quite the modern architectural tourist attraction dedicated to the Virgin Mary. However, it is quite a pleasant surprise to find that construction began in the nineteenth century only to be finished in the late twentieth century. Eight chapels exhibit the life of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary as well as the Saints. The cathedral is also home to the towering organ and quite a collection of stained glass from the twentieth century.

While in Lille, one must not pass up the chance to visit the Lille Old Town where the Flemish facet of Lille is most incredibly seen and experienced. A good number of the cities selling points are found here including the Cathedral and the Hospice Comtesse Museum mentioned above. The narrow cobbled passages and buildings of red bricks certainly add to the atmosphere.

No matter where one goes within Lille, one need only look around to see just how beautiful the area is. The above-mentioned attractions comprise only a small part of what the city of Lille can offer its tourists, visitors and inhabitants. One must be there to fully comprehend what mere words would be unable to express.
