Lille City Guide

The city of Lille in northern France is among the country's largest metropolitan areas. However, it was only in recent years that the city's reputation rose to become the hub of cultural splendor and commercial vitality it is today. Tourists are entranced by the grand Flemish accent of the people. Lille is full of trendy shops, fine bistros with a taste of Flemish cuisine, some class hotels and more. But before you can enjoy all of these, you need to get there first. In this regard, Lille has several alternatives for you.

Most European visitors can easily travel to Lille by land especially since European railway lines pass through Lille on their way to and from Paris. There are a number of railway transport providers including Eurostar and the TGV. Other transportation providers and their schedules can be checked online through the SCNF website.

From London, it takes about one hour and twenty minutes to reach Lille via the Eurostar. Fares may depend on whether you book a one-way, return, second class or first class ticket. Brussels is just a thirty minute train ride from Lille, while Paris may take about an hour. Most often, there would be direct TGV routes from Lille to other cities in France.

There are also some bus lines which run from Brussels, Amsterdam, and London to Lille. However, these may typically take longer than the train ride. For example, a bus ride from Brussels to Lille lasts for one or two hours. From Amsterdam and London, it can take up to six hours on a bus.

For non-Europeans who wish to travel to Lille directly, the Lille Lesquin International Airport, although small, is a perfectly convenient way to enter Lille and the areas nearby. In a way the smaller size bodes well since it warrants less walking around from the plane to the check-ins to the security gates. However, the airport is six miles from the center of Lille and from there you will have to continue the journey to central Lille in a coach. The coaches run once every hour and you can reach central Lille in about twenty minutes. The journey costs seven Euros for a one-way ticket and nine Euros for a return ticket. This is the better choice since a taxi from the airport to central Lille can cost up to 20 Euros.

Lille has pedestrian lanes everywhere so walking is an ideal form of transport within the city. For those who prefer to stay off their feet, there are two subway metro lines which can take them to just about any destination within the city.
