Brussels is the capital of Belgium and a large cosmopolitan center. It offers many cultural events and festivals throughout the year.
There are 4 main events during the summer: Brussels Beach, Brussels Summer Festival, Midi Fair and Flower Carpet. The Flower Carper takes place in historic Grand Place every 2 years.
During Brussels Beach, the banks of the city channel are decorated to provide an urban beach. Huts, deck chairs and fountains are added. Sand is brought from the North Sea to create a real sandy beach of 1 Km length. The beach exists for about a month, from mid July to mid August. The theme and decorations change every year.
The Brussels Summer Festival began in 2002 and is the largest cultural event of the last 10 days of August. A pass can be purchased to discover the most spectacular attractions and museums of the city of Brussels. The festival covers many arts such as theater, music, street animations and architecture. The festival takes place around the Royal Palace, the Brussels park and the museums.
Midi Fair is held in July and August and is one of the oldest and most traditional events since 1880. The fair combines many attractions including culinary arts that can be sampled and tasted!
Plan your trip so as not to miss the spectacular Flower Carpet of the historic Grand Place. Every 2 years, Grand Place is covered with a carpet of begonias. The event was born in 1971. Flowers of different colors are combined to create attractive shapes and patterns.
Besides summer events, there are also autumn events. The most notable are Nuit Blanche and Heritage Days. Nuit Blanche was first created in Paris in 2002 and expanded into other cities. It is an autumn event with new artistic projects every year. The purpose is to demonstrate the urban environment of the city and its contemporary art. Everyone is invited to become an artist for a night. Heritage Days takes place in the middle of September for discovering the buildings and institutions of the city.
Winter Wonders is the major event of the winter season. It begun in 2004 and is a combination of culture and entertainment. It occurs in December and extends through the New Year. It consists of a large Christmas market, fairground attractions, an ice rink and a Christmas Tree on the Grand Place. Decorations and lights offer exceptional night views of the city.
Brussels offers a great variety of festivals and cultural events. Make sure to check them out before you venture on a trip to the city.
