Brussels is a large European cultural city of distinct history and architecture. In reality, it combines two cultures, French and Dutch, to provide a unique Belgian culture. The city is also the headquarters of the European Union and houses the European Parliament, the European Commission and NATO. These buildings with their modern contemporary style offer a contrast to the Gothic art and other historic building remains.
It is very easy to move around the city as there is very good public transportation. Visitors can easily walk around town, ride a bike or take the bus. There is a reliable and safe metro/train system. The historic part of the city with its pebble stoned streets is closed to cars and can be explored on foot. Brussels houses a modern airport with transportation (bus, train, and taxi) to the city center.
The weather in Brussels is very rainy with about 200 rainy days in a year, so don't forget to bring an umbrella with you! Even in the summer there is heavy rainfall but it does not get very hot. Winter is chilly but heavy snowfall is rare. However, rain and melted snow make a wet ground.
There are luxurious expensive hotels as well as more affordable accommodations. The food is excellent. Don't forget to try Belgian chocolate and bring some back for your friends and family. Belgians consider their chocolate to be better than Swiss!
There are many companies offering guided tours and cruises presenting an excellent overview of the city and its attractions. Certain companies such as VisitBrussels also have specific themes walks and tours. There is a variety of them for both adults and children.
Don't miss the Comic Book route. This is a unique route featuring building walls painted with popular comic book heroes in entertaining situations. There is also a Tintin walk as Brussels played a major role in the creation of this cartoon hero.
Other theme walks target art connoisseurs and aficionados, antique hunters, fashionistas, and even avid fitness lovers. There is the Art Nouveau Walk, Fashion Trail, Walk Europe, Classic walk and Brussels sight jogging. Guided tours invite visitors to discover the museums and cultural heritage of the city as well as the City Hall and other attractions.
No matter what your interests and favorite activities are, Brussels is a destination worth visiting. You will return home with a rich, fulfilling experience and stories to tell.
