Amsterdam Events and Festivals

Amsterdam is the place to reunite many cultures and ethnicities. It is highly liberal and cosmopolitan, often shocking or even looked down on despite its astonishing cultural and historical value. However, Amsterdam is a home of many important and sometimes unusual events you should take note of and even attend!

Queensday: This national Dutch event takes place every 30 April and celebrates the birth of the Queen Mother. Although the celebration is spread all over the Netherlands, it has a specific touch in Amsterdam. People all over the country arrive here to attend parties and manifestations during which they wear orange, according to the tradition.

Uitmarkt: It is a cultural event considered to be of highest importance in Amsterdam. It takes place every year during the last weekend in August, it is dedicated to the opening of the Dutch Cultural and involves exhibitions, live concerts, workshops and fairs.

Holland Festival: This festival is held in June and is one of the most important art festivals in Netherlands. It reunites various artistic fields and offers a wide range of art workshops to attend.

Kwakoe Festival: Party, party, party! Kwakoe Festival is held every weekend in July and August. The many days of entertainment and cultural debauchery are mostly dedicated to families and are a great way to spend summer days, as it only takes place between 10 AM and 8 PM.

Taste of Amsterdam: It is the most important culinary event in the city. Both amateurs and chefs will have the opportunity to put their many talents into practice and exhibit their culinary artwork in the main parks.

The Chinese New Year: As Amsterdam reunites various cultures and beliefs, this event is dedicated to a significant moment in the Chinese culture and is held in Chinatown.

Jordaan Festival: This event announces plenty of cultural diversity and focuses on the Jewish community. Music, children activities and auctions are some of the activities taking place during the festival.

Saint Nicholas, Christmas Day, Boxing Day: Saint Nicholas is a worldwide valued tradition, however in Amsterdam this takes incredible turns. Saint Nicholas arrives on a ship deck, along with his servants, and his arrival is later on followed by a festive parade. Children greet Saint Nicholas and are given candy and sweets. If you have ever dreamt of a prolonged Christmas, you would be surprised to find out Boxing Day is celebrated in many countries on December 26th. Customarily, people exchange gifts to bring health and good luck.

High Times Cannabis Cup: No, unfortunately it is not an official smoking contest, however it is an event Dutch youth values, as it consists of five days of pure November entertainment. Parties, music, tasting sessions in cozy Amsterdam coffeeshops are just three of the various activities enhanced by this event.

5 Days Off: No work for five days? It would be very generous indeed, but this name is again deceiving. This event is a recent asset, however it has already gained worlwide reputation. It is all about electronic music and takes place in July.
