Amsterdam is a vibrant city famous for its specific sights, cultural background and history. Once you get there, you may find it difficult to decide what to visit first or where to go next, as there are countless opportunities to choose from. However, don't panic, as here you will find some useful guidance to keep in mind for whenever you decide to visit.
Let's start vith Amsterdam's most famous museums. If you are fond of painting, you should know Amsterdam is probably one of the best places in Europe to fuel your fondness. Keep in mind the van Gogh museum is the place to be and must not be missed. Exhibitions of over seven hundred van Gogh works will thrill your eyes and artistic senses. "Sunflowers", "The Bedroom", "The Potato Eaters" and seven hundred many others await to be admired by art lovers and not only. The newly refitted Rijksmuseum is open to visitors and hosts true masterpieces like "Woman Reading a Letter" by Vermeer and Rembrandt's "Night Watch".
Alternatively, you can travel more into history and culture by visiting the Anne Frank Huis , the house in the Jordaan neighborhood where Anne Frank and her family lived and hid during the Holocaust. Visiting Descartes' house can prove to be quite inspiring, and maybe you will discover you are a bit of a rationalist yourself! The old city gates are a spectacular view, as well as Keukenhof Gardens, a home of tulips. Afterwards, you can stop by at one of the many famous coffee shops and indulge yourself some quality time out.
The Amsterdam Dungeon is not for the weak hearted. It does give you the creeps, however it is vital to understanding the fascinating history and culture behind (or below...) this exquisite city. You can hear stories about the origins of the Grim Reaper legend and you will be surprised to see how much fun you can have in a place dedicated to painful torture and death: the mirror maze and roller coaster are not to be missed. You can also admire flawless wax replicas of the most famous figures at Madame Tussauds or let yourself entertained at Boom Chicago, the famous improvisational comedy theatre with all shows performing in English.
The Amsterdam Culinary Snack Bike Tour is pretty unique and worth of your attention and culinary taste. While riding a bike, you will be able to sample various herring and cheese specialties, and also enjoy local beer if you happen to get thirsty. The tour takes about three hours, so be sure you will need the beer!
Last, but not least, one of the most controversial and also popular tours available in Amsterdam refer to the red light district and cannabis cultures. During these tours, you will gain knowledge about the oldest profession in the world (don't worry, the tour is completely safe and risk free), as well as about the rather unusual Dutch habit of growing... various plants among tulips. Also, try not to miss the marijuana and hemp museum!
